7/6/2023 0 Comments Bear marian engel review“Did anyone tell you,” asks the man who brings her to the island in a snarling motorboat just before he roars back up the river to the closest thing that passes for a town, “about the bear?” The house boasts a library and the woman, who is a librarian, an archivist really, a historian of this territory, a place often taken to have no history at all, is meant to catalogue it. The island holds little more than a house, although admittedly a big one for this remote territory, and strangely shaped too, with eight sides and no real corners, two levels, many windows – ridiculous anywhere but especially here, where you need a fire most of the year. “ A bizarre but strangely uplifting book about a woman’s quest for freedom… the perfect escapist yet intellectual read.” The TimesĪ woman is sent to an island for a summer.

7/6/2023 0 Comments Broken beautiful monstersIt is awful and lasts a good half of the book. And whatever he suffered under Tarrick is nothing compared to what the High King Malarath and his second, Prescott, put Matthew through. It’s awful to see Matthew live so freely in Sire, only to be brought back into captivity once more in Broken. If you thought Captive was bad, the content in this was way worse.Ĭonent notes include rape on-the-page, torture, violence, sexual assault, incest, forced apadravya (genital piercing), depression, and I don’t know how to describe this but sexual scenes involving 200-something-year-old vampires who still look like they’re in their pre-teens. This book started off cruel and disturbing and utterly heartbreaking. I’m not sure it makes up for the first half of this book though. The last 10-15% of this book was AMAZING. All Matthew needs to do is start acting like an incubus and put on a show.Īuthor’s note: This book contains dark scenes. While all trust Matthew had in the general is gone, maybe there is hope in the situation. The High King, angered that his pet is dying, brings in the one person who might be able to fix Matthew: High Lord General Tarrick. And, in his despair, his body begins to decay around him. A slave to incubus High King Malarath, Matthew is tired. Matthew has many names, but none as distressing as pet. Previous books in the series: Captive | Sire SYNOPSIS Three-word review: hot, sweet and heartwarming. Each book can be read as a standalone but are so yummy I wouldn’t recommend missing a single one! This story belongs to sexy firefighter Gabe Sullivan and is my favorite of the series to date. Enjoy my review and be sure to enter to win your own copy of sexy fireman Gabe Sullivan’s story.Ĭan’t Help Falling in Love by Bella Andre is the third book in Sullivan’s series about a group of eight siblings and their romances. Today I am excited to share my review of Can’t Help Falling in Love by Bella Andre for the Summer of Love Tour hosted by BookTrib. But when Gabe and Megan meet again, how can he possibly ignore her courage, determination, and beauty? And how can she deny not only his strong bond with her daughter but also his sweetly sensual kisses, challenging her to risk everything she's been guarding for so long? Because after losing her pilot husband, she has vowed to never suffer through loving and losing a man with a dangerous job again. Especially not to the woman he saved from a deadly apartment fire and can't stop thinking about Megan Harris owes everything to the heroic firefighter who saved her and her daughter. How much is worth risking? Gabe Sullivan risks his life every day as a firefighter in San Francisco, but he knows better than to risk giving his heart again. 7/6/2023 0 Comments The wronged sons john marrsThe characters, although mostly unlikeable felt like they were well developed and thought out. The are also mentions of some characters taking DNA tests to be matched with “the one”, which I assume is a nod to his other futuristic novel The One, which is soon to become a Netflix drama. I mentioned the author’s previous book The Passengers, and this does feels like it’s set in the same domain. The near future possibilities and the UK setting (if you live in the UK like I do) all add to the authentic feel of the story. I won’t ruin the story, but I recommend you get this book. Of course, there are unforeseen effects and it doesn’t go completely to plan. So, what’s the catch? Well, they have to carry and protect this information inside their own heads. In this recent book, the government, in an attempt to safeguard the country’s most secretive information, take five people who are looking to escape their regular lives and promises to rewards them highly. John Marrs, despite writing crime thrillers earlier in his career, seems to have stepped up his writing with the step into near future crime and this is where his best writing is. Having read The Passengers (also by John Marrs (and The Wronged Sons – although I only recently realised this was by the same author) I was looking forward to this book. 7/6/2023 0 Comments Death of a gossip by mc beatonBefore he died, it seems, Felix Vodyanov was linked to a passenger ferry that sank in 1994, an even earlier U.S. But the hints of other crimes Tempe’s identification uncovers, particularly crimes against children, spur her on to redouble her efforts despite the new M.E.’s splenetic outbursts. Heavner isn’t exactly mollified when Tempe, aided by retired police detective Skinny Slidell and a host of experts, puts a name to the dead man. Nettled by several errors in Heavner’s analysis, and even more by her willingness to share the gory details at a press conference, Tempe launches her own investigation, which is not so much off the books as against the books. Showboat Medical Examiner Margot Heavner makes it clear that, breaking with her department’s earlier practice ( The Bone Collection, 2016, etc.), she has no intention of calling in Tempe as a consultant and promptly identifies the faceless body herself as that of a young Asian man. Another sweltering month in Charlotte, another boatload of mysteries past and present for overworked, overstressed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan.Ī week after the night she chases but fails to catch a mysterious trespasser outside her town house, some unknown party texts Tempe four images of a corpse that looks as if it’s been chewed by wild hogs, because it has been. 7/6/2023 0 Comments Cloud cuckooland reviewKonstance, aboard The Argos, interacts with her unique environment, complete with an observant Alexa-type companion. Teen Seymour and 80-year-old Zeno Ninis participate in activities at the Lakeport Public Library, which has an ideal librarian named Marian. Sources of resilience and hope in the face of vividly- described peril are revealed as we become acquainted with each character.Īnna and Omeir, in their teen years, have dramatically different experiences of Constantinople. Four children in their teens and one man in his eighties are immersed in the challenges of their times. The author has created five plot lines set in the past, present and future (not necessarily in that order!) Constantinople in the fifteenth century, Lakeport, Idaho in the present and an interstellar ship, The Argos, decades from now are the backdrop for the development of the main characters. Anthony Doerr creates his own version of a similar play by an imaginary writer, Antonius Diogenes, and words from the title are used as touchstones throughout his intertwining stories. The curious title of this novel was inspired by The Birds, a work of Aristophanes, the Greek playwright. Resident Janet Neer’s review of Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr, is scheduled for Tuesday, Maat 7 PM in the Auditorium. 7/6/2023 0 Comments 3 dark crowns series orderArsinoe is a naturalist, meant to wield abilities to control animals and manipulate crop growth. Katherine is fostered with the powerful Arron family, she is taught to live and breathe the art of poison. Katherine, Arsinoe, and Mirabella are separated in their childhood – each groomed to become a powerful wielder of magic in their respective talent. The title of Three Dark Crowns refer to three sisters born to a monstrous destiny. I also found it difficult to invest in any of the three princesses, despite Three Dark Crowns being a very character-driven book. Unfortunately, I felt very little was accomplished within this first novel. Three Dark Crowns is blessed with a unique and vivid world, along with a premise that promises high stakes and dangerous intrigue. "In many respects, the Mexican revolution was not only a men's but a women's revolution." Although some revolutionary women achieved officer status, coronelas, "there are no reports of a woman achieving the rank of general." Since revolutionary armies did not have formal ranks, some women officers were called generala or coronela, even though they commanded relatively few men. Soldaderas, often called Adelitas, were women in the military who participated in the conflict of the Mexican Revolution, ranging from commanding officers to combatants to camp followers. As Penman ( Time and Chance, 2002, etc.) picks up her saga of the Angevins and Plantagenets in the present volume, Richard has dispatched with a pesky sibling and is now off in the Near East, embarking on the great task of freeing the Holy Land from the Muslims. One of his heirs was Richard, who was no stranger to either intrigue or war. A thick medieval oater in which Richard Coeur de Lion meets Al-Malik al-Nasir Salah al-Din, heads roll and the world shakes and shivers.Ī little exposition in describing a book full of it: As fans of The Lion in Winter will remember, Henry II, King of England and Duke of Normandy, married the phenomenally smart Eleanor of Aquitaine and had five sons, three of whom rose up against him in rebellion. |
